The Trust for Avian Systematics is a registered non-membership UK charity (No. 1014427) with a small body of trustees. It grew out of the Trust for Oriental Ornithology, which together with Naturalis in Leiden pioneered the “Systematic Notes on Asian Birds”. In 2010, it agreed to accept the gift of the main intellectual property in the Howard and Moore Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World, originated by Richard Howard a founder Trustee of “TOO”, and taken forward by Edward Dickinson who was retired after the 4th edition. The Trust’s broad interests are taxonomy and nomenclature and support for the continuing role of taxonomists and for their education on the subject of nomenclature. For this reason the Trust supports the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) and its activity “ZooBank”. Specific activities in these areas are to be formulated. In the meantime TAS provides a link between the above check-list’s appointed managing editor and the Trust’s database held on the computers of Bird Studies Canada for TAS by Denis Lepage, who has agreed to provide an open public platform for the Penhallurick database which is now vested in TAS.
